104 “Vulcan”, Ruston 198287 of 1940

“Vulcan” was new in April 1940 to the Air Ministry munitions storage depot at Harpur Hill, near Buxton. In 1957, the loco moved to a depot at Burtonwood (Lancashire). Burtonwood seems to have been a central workshop/store for Air Ministry locos. The loco then went to RAF Fauld, sometime after December 1957. The Fauld site (near Tutbury, Staffordshire) suffered a cataclysmic explosion in 1944. In March 1970, the loco moved to the City of Bradford Water Dept, Chellow Heights Works, and then to Thornton Moor Reservoir in July 1972. These became part of the Yorkshire Water Authority, who identified the loco as “Y3” (and marked the loco as such, using weld on the frame). In late 1980/early 1981, the loco moved to the much-missed Abbey Light Railway in Leeds. When the ALR closed, it moved again to Embsay. The loco moved to Apedale on 2 September 2022. At Apedale, the loco has been repainted, and the existing air brake installation modified for compatibility with the system in use on the AVLR. As a consequence, “Vulcan” joins locos no.13 and 90 as authorised for use on normal passenger trains.
