Remember us in your will – how a legacy can make a permanent difference at Apedale
The Moseley Railway Trust has been the recipient of a number of generous legacies. Amongst the projects they have funded have been
- the construction of the new museum,
- the acquisition of the steam loco ‘WOTO’
- the construction of a vehicle unloading pad to make moving items by road safer and easier
- the overhaul of the Hudswell Clarke steam locomotive after repatriation from Ghana

The Moseley Railway Trust is a registered charity, number 1100827 and is entirely managed and operated by volunteers. This means that administration and other overhead costs are minimal – so your hard-earned legacy goes into improving the Trust’s work and facilities, not into paying managers.
Since the Moseley Railway Trust is a registered charity, any amount you leave to it should, under current tax rules, qualify for relief from Inheritance Tax. This means that all your money will go to the Trust and the railway. If you are considering making a gift to the Moseley Railway Trust in your will (a legacy), it is important that you get the advice of a solicitor. The law about wills and legacies – and related tax issues – can be complicated, and if you write your own will without legal advice, there is a risk that your wishes may not be carried out in the way you intended.
You are welcome to leave a legacy to be used for a specific purpose, or for more general funding at the discretion of the Trustees. Please contact us to discuss your wishes. It may not always be practical to carry out a particular request, and this can give rise to difficulties if it is written in to your will. The Trust’s needs may vary over time, and it is very helpful if you can allow the Trustees as much flexibility as possible to find alternative ways in which your gift may be used if necessary. Again, we strongly recommend seeking the advice of a solicitor who will be able to advise you on the appropriate wording to allow this.
When thinking about leaving a legacy, you need to consider what kind of gift you wish to make, for example:
- You can leave the Moseley Railway Trust a specific amount – a pecuniary legacy – or
- You can provide that a part or all of your estate should benefit a relative or relatives during their lifetime(s), but will pass to the Trust after their death(s).
In recent years, the Moseley Railway Trust has also received a number of physical objects – including railway locomotives – through legacies from their owners. Whilst we are honoured to be chosen as the ‘forever home’ of such cherished items, we may not always be the most suitable recipient for some items. If you are contemplating passing assets of this nature on to the Trust, please discuss your wishes with us beforehand. Such discussions will, of course, be treated with the upmost discretion.
Whatever you choose to do, it is important that, in your will, you mention the full details of the Moseley Railway Trust as follows:
Moseley Railway Trust, Registered office address:- 11 Ashwood Road, Disley, Stockport, Cheshire, SK12 2EL (registered charity number 1100827).
