This modern loco is a standard Hunslet 28HP mines locomotive. It was new in 1982 to the National Coal Board’s Gedling colliery, but moved in September 1982 to Calverton colliery, where it spent the remainder of its working life. Both these collierys were part of the Nottinghamshire coalfield. The loco arrived at the MRT on 13/9/1997.
The loco arrived at Apedale for display on 12/3/04. Unusually this loco has air start, rather than the more usual battery; this is to remove the risks from sparks caused by a battery, which is hazardous in a mining environment. The loco is classed as flameproof, meaning that it was fitted with the necessary flame traps to allow its safe use underground.
