76 Ruston 243392 of 1946

No.76 is a 13DL Ruston, 243392 of 1946. The loco was new to Bord Na Mona, and was always 24” gauge, making it a “minority member” of the BnM fleet (which is mostly 36” gauge). It now carries a Lister engine, apparently fitted whilst with BnM. It worked at the Kilberry works, County Kildare. By June 1991, the loco had moved to  the Clyde Valley Country Estate, Crossford, Lanarkshire, who painted it to resemble Thomas the Tank Engine.  It was perhaps most notable for having been stolen by scrap metal thieves around this time; it was subsequently recovered and returned to its rightful owners. However,  the newspaper coverage of this alerted the owners of the Thomas franchise to this imposter, which led to a “cease and desist” letter arriving – and (one imagines) a quick re-paint. By 2015, the loco had been sold to a scrap dealer at Gogarbank, and thence to an owner in Saffron Walden. In May 2016, it returned north again, to a yard in Stoke, before moving to Apedale on 15 February 2021.
