These two locos were built by Simplex Mechanical Handling (SMH), the successor to Motor Rail – but still based in Bedford. SMH 60SD754 and 755 were supplied in August and September of 1980 to the NCB surface stockyard systems at Prince of Wales and Wheldale collieries; both built to were 760mm gauge, and fitted with Deutz air-cooled engines. They eventually ended up at Allerton Bywater colliery, and thence to preservation at the Yorkshire Dales Railway at Embsay. Both moved to Apedale on 2/9/22. 102 has been regauged (to 2’0″ gauge) and is operational; 103 awaits regauging and a full restoration.
