We’ve hosted a corporate volunteering day. A good turnout was tasked with fettling one of the WDLR “D” class wagons. Pressure of space means outdoor storage for many of the wagons, and inevitably this had taken a toll on the paintwork – the underlying wood and metal fortunately remaining in good order. A flurry (not sure of the correct collective noun) of electric sanders were deployed, and the area sounded like an angry hornet’s next for most of the morning. But many hands make light work, and there was time for a good coat of primer and then undercoat. All in all, a good job done, and many thanks.
The wagon will be in operation, hopefully top-coated and lettered, at our Military Trains weekend on May 27, 28 and 29. Two steam locos will be in use – the Hudswell (WDLR 104) and the War Office Loco Trust’s Hunslet (WDLR 303). The WW1 Trench will be open for visitors, and you can enjoy a meal from a real field kitchen!
