A busy Saturday at Apedale with lots of rail movements. Why? Because it’s a Training Day. Just with the Big Railway, anyone carrying out critical work on the Apedale Valley Light Railway must be trained and assessed as competent to do so. So, the training day saw various members trained as Basic Shunter (the entry level qualification), Yard Driver (which allows the individual to drive locos in the yard and on non-passenger trains) and Passenger Diesel Driver (which is fairly self-explanatory). We take pride in the fact that members who possess the appropriate aptitudes, experience and attitude can progress rapidly through the ranks – there’s no “you must clean engines for three years”. New members are alwasy welcomed, and all members of the Moseley Railway Trust are eligible to take part in training days and hence develop skills they never knew they had. Membership details are here:- https://avlr.org.uk/moseley-railway-trust/membership. We have a forthcoming New Members Day on April 15th, when prospective new volunteers can see behind the scenes and discover what volunteering is like, and how it can benefit both the railway and the individual.
