Smoke without Fire – preparations

The casual visitor could have been forgiven for thinking that the Diesel Gala had happened a week early, as many of the fleet were extracted from sheds, tested and fettled. All of this work is to hopefully ensure that next weekend’s operations are as smooth and trouble-free as one would expect when using tempramental machines which are typically well over 50 years old, and in some cases heading towards the century. The current roster is:
Saturday 3 October1130 – Wingrove battery loco C6716 of 1963. 1200 – Motor Rail petrol loco 9104 of 1941. 1300 – Hibberd 3465 of 1954 “Ald Hague” plus Orenstein & Koppel petrol loco 4588 of 1932. 1330 – Hunslet 6007 of 1963.1400 – Motor Rail 21520 of 1955. 1430 – Lister Blackstone 52610 of 1961 and 52885 of 1962. 1500 – Motor Rail petrol loco 1111 of 1918. 1530 – Motor Rail 5821 of 1934. 1600 – Hudson LX1001 and LX1002, both 1968, Following testing, those planning to travel on this train are recommended to bring sleeping bags and Kendal Mint Cake, as both locos would be easily outpaced by a match-fit snail.
