Military Trains weekend – new loco unveiled

A little announcement about our Military Trains event on May 27, 28 & 29. We will be welcoming into passenger service 48-horsepower Ruston 198287. This loco, named “Vulcan” has a good military pedigree – it was new to the Air Ministry (as AMW197) in 1940, and worked at their depots at Harpur Hill, (Buxton) and Fauld, sometime after 12/57 – perhaps fortunately after the famous Big Bang 27 November 1944. In more recent years, the loco was best-known as being part of the fleet at the much-missed Abbey Light Railway, near Kirkstall in Leeds. We anticipate that the loco will work demonstration trains during the day, and then switch to work the final passenger train of each day at 16:00 hrs. This will be the first time the loco has worked passenger trains at Apedale, and the first time since it left the Abbey Light Railway.
Most trains during the event will be worked by our two military steam engines – Hudswell 1238 and Hunslet 1215. Our World War One Trench will be open for visitors. We would welcome applications from potential exhibitors – more detail and an exhibitor entry form can be found at https://avlr.org.uk/event/military-trains
