Looking forward to next weekend – July 10 & 11 – and the Classic Diesel and Steam weekend. It’s like a Diesel Gala, only with added steam locos. The format is that two steam locos will work most of the mainline passenger trains – these will be “Stanhope” and Hudswell Clarke 1238. Two diesels will work mainline freights and also the first and last passenger trains each day. On Saturday, the first passenger train will be at 11.00, and will be worked by No.27, Ruston 198297 “Annie”. The last train – at 1600 – will be worked by the big red Hudswell diesel, D558. On Sunday, the first train will be worked by No.42 (Motor Rail 7710). The last train will see the all-time passenger debut of Motor Rail 22235, recently arrived from Haslemere – this train is sure to be popular.
The field railway will see demonstration trains worked by many of the IC fleet – too many to list here. Around the site, there will be free access to the Aurora North engine shed, and guided tours of the new Aurora South building. The WW1 Trench will be open, and there will be a display of stationary engines.
Standard fares will be charged at just £3.50 adults, £1.50 children; all-day Rover tickets will be available. Please note that the loco allocations are, of course, subject to the foibles of old and fragile machinery!
