Another busy (and cold) weekend at Apedale. The annual servicing of the coaching stock was finally finished, and the train assembled ready for the Santas. Down the line, the last of the sleeper changes were being carried out – typically, around 10 sleepers need to be changed as life-expired at the end of each season, and this year has been no exception. At the opposite end of the site, the forest-in-a-box had been opened, as Santa’s Grotto begins to take shape down at the Heritage Centre.Meanwhile, the workshop saw considerable activity on Motor Rail 21520. The loco came to site with no engine; a replacement has been sourced, but it’s just a little larger than the original Deutz unit. Space is at something of a premium between the frames of a Motor Rail, so the audience awaits with baited breath to see if all the equipment can be squeezed in. In case you’re wondering, the large piece of timber was apparently a key part of fitting the flywheel to the engine!
