Today we head south. 1984, and this is a contract which was underway to expand the BR tunnel just London side of Southampton station. I believe the objective was to clear the route for 8’0″ containers. Ironically, the job has been repeated in recent years, this time to accomodate 9’6″ containers – just shows how the shipping market keeps changing. In 1984, the contractor used a 2’0″ railway whilst one of the BR tracks remained in use.One imagines that in the more recent job, the dreaded Rail Replacement Bus saw extensive use. Loco IDs are not known, but clearly two LBT Rustons were deployed along with a Clayton battery loco.
