Member’s Day at Apedale, which is a chance to reflect and discuss on the season just gone – many things went well, but there are always things to be learnt. The traditional Cannonball Express ran (eventually) in the afternoon, with a distinctly Germanic feel. On one end was the baby Orenstein petrol loco, number 4588, fresh from its recent Big Adventure to Europe. On the other end was Deutz 10050. This is the loco’s first prolonged run after the repaired flywheel was fitted. You may recall that that flywheel was found to have a serious crack in 2018. Following a crowdfunding campaign, funds were raised for the flywheel to be specialist repaired, and the loco is now back operational with its “unique” sound effects. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all of those who supported the crowdfunding campaign; now we have some confidence in the loco, we’ll try to give a bit of notice of its next operation so that those who contributed can come and see their donations turned into welded metal!
