101, Wickham 3164 of 1942

This vehicle arrived at Apedale on 24 June 2022; this is a nice example of a target trolley. They were used to carry wooden targets around firing ranges – typically mock-ups of tanks and similar vehicles. The idea was that trainee gunners would identify friend-or-foe, and hopefully hit those tanks in the latter category. The Wickham innards were protected by steel sheets, and earth berms, hopefully saved them from oblivion.

The particularly trolley was new to the gun ranges at Lydd in Kent, and was allocated running number RTT/767172. It was fitted with JAP1323 Special petrol engine. In October 1998, it moved to Yorkshire Engine at Long Marston, then to an individual in Tewksbury in November 2000, and then to Yorkshire Dales Railway, Embsay around 2003. At Embsay, it donated its engine to standard gauge Wickham 7610.

Since arriving at Apedale (in 2022), this trolley has acquired a prominent mock-up tank, replicating (albeit in steel rather than timber) the targets which it would have carried when in use on Lydd ranges..
