If you sign up for Trust membership on this day\, your membership will run through to the end of 2027!\n\n\n\nEvents will run from 1100 until 1500. If you are interested\, please register beforehand by sending an e-mail to operations@avlr.org.uk and letting us know what area of the Trust’s work you may be interested in. SUMMARY:Cadeby Light Railway Day
DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago\, in 1986\, the world bid farewell to the Rev Teddy Boston. Immortalised as the Fat Clergyman in the Thomas the Tank Engine stories\, Teddy Boston built and operated the 2’0″ gauge Cadeby Light Railway around the village rectory gardens. After that railway closed\, much of the equipment came to Apedale and under the care of the Moseley Railway Trust. On this day\, we will operate some of that equipment and remember Teddy and Cadeby. \nUpdate 28/1/26:- Fares for this event will be:- Admission and a single  train – £5 adult\, £1 child. Day Rovers – Adult £15\, Children £3. Locos in use will be WOTO (impersonating another well-known Bagnall)\, plus a selection of the ex-Cadeby internal combustion fleet on passenger and freight trains. These will include Hudswell D558\, Motor Rails 2197\, 7710 (No.42) and 8748 (No.20). We are also delighted to welcome a visiting loco to the event – the little Cadeby petrol loco which (probably) hauled more passenger trains than the rest of the fleet combined. Intrigued? Only one way to find out! Trains will run from 1130 to 1600. NOTE that this event is on SATURDAY only. \nUpdate 18/3/26:- We will operate “Cadeby Trains” using Fauld wagons and the ex-Cadeby diesel locos. These trains will operate in between the main passenger trains (which will use the considerably more comfortable Ffestiniog coaches). The “Cadeby Trains” will be available for Day Rover ticket holders only.  The Fauld wagons are\, politely\, rather basic as passenger accommodation. Therefore\, they can only convey adults who are physically able to climb into the wagons. The main passenger train is\, of course\, available to all including wheelchair users.

SUMMARY:Winter Steam Photo day (and night)
DESCRIPTION:Taking advantage of the dark evenings\, we will run a Winter Steam Photo Day on Saturday January 10th. The evet will feature the War Office Hunslet 1215 with War Department wagons and Hudswell Clarke 1238\, fresh from overhaul\, with a selection of skips. No passenger trains will be in operation\, so we will have free-range on the railway to set-up photo shots. \nThe event will start at 1300\, and run until around 2000 (at the latest) with lighting provided for night photos. The site gets very dark and very cold after sunset – and there are ample tripping hazards. So\, you must have a torch and sensible footwear (if you’re cold\, that’s your problem). \nIt will be operated on a “by donation” – card or cash – and it’s really simple – if we cover costs\, then we’ll probably run the event again! \nUpdate 1/1/26:- The plan for this day is as follows: \nOn arrival\, please report to the Station Shop where\, in exchange for a donation (card/cash\, suggested minimum £5\, you will get a lanyard (so we know who’s paid and a briefing sheet).  The plan is: \n1300-1400 – HE to operate on mainline doing run-pasts north to south (smokebox leading). North of AN. \nHC to be waiting in shed yard with wagons whilst this happens. \n1400-1430 – HE and HC1238 to do parallel moves\, AN yard to Field divergence. \n1430 – 1530 – HC1238 to operate on field with Beswicks skips \n(whilst this happens\, HE to park wagons on mainline and return to shed yard). \n1530 – HC1238 and train return to shed yard. HE shunt-releases skips from HC. \nHC1238 proceeds to mainline and couples to WDLR wagons. \n1530 – dusk – HC1238 does run-pasts on mainline to the north of AN. \nAfter dusk\, we will arrange a series of photo cameos:- \n\nBoth locos with WDLR wagons at Apedale Road\, using battery lights. Either double-head or use a runner to move tokens as needed.\nThen HC1238 to head to field via AN (to collect skips).\nWhilst this happens – shoot with HE1215 alongside approach road.\nHC1238 at Loos Loops with skips. Battery lights in use.\nHE1215 to be on mainline\, HC1238 alongside red shed – both locos in parallel.\nPlus any other ideas as they occur!!\n\nWe are open to requests and suggestions for photo set-ups – but please be aware that go/no-go decision by the site Duty Controller is final! \nImportant:- The weather forecast for the period up to and including the 10th is poor. If the weather turns out such that safety of the public or our volunteers is at risk\, we will have to cance. Any such decision will be updated here and on Facebook. Fingers crossed….

SUMMARY:Penrhyn Steam-Up Day
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years ago\, on January 15 1965\, the last steam train operated within the vast Penrhyn slate quarries in North Wales. That last train was operated by Avonside loco “Ogwen” – and the driver wrote his name and the date inside the cab to mark this end of an era. \nSince then\, “Ogwen” has been to the USA and returned\, has been restored back to steam and now lives at Apedale – but the inscription in the cab remains! \nTo mark this anniversary\, we will operate our two ex-Penrhyn locos – “Ogwen” and “Stanhope” with a selection of suitable slate wagons. This will be a very informal day; no passenger trains will operate\, and admission will be by donation. Trains will run from around 1200. \nNote that the advert in January “Narrow Gauge World” magazine contains an incorrect date for this event.

SUMMARY:Visiting loco - "Sir Tom"
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that we will be hosting a visiting loco at the end of June. Bagnall saddle tank “Sir Tom” will be visiting Apedale as part of a tour away from its normal base at Threlkeld in Cumbria. This delightful loco has a Staffordshire pedigree\, being a Stafford product. However\, its working life was down south\, at a cable manufacturing works in Kent. SUMMARY:ListerFest\, 18 and 19 May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Moseley Railway Trust announces ListerFest for 18 & 19 May 2024 \n\n\n\nThe Moseley Railway Trust is proud to announce ListerFest! To be held over the weekend of 18 & 19 May 2024\, this event will take place at the Trust’s Apedale Valley Light Railway. This 2’0” gauge railway is located at the Apedale Community Country Park\, Newcastle-under-Lyme\, Staffordshire. R A Lister & Co was an engineering company located at Dursley\, Gloucestershire. They became well-known for the production of small internal combustion engines. The company branched out into industrial vehicles which used these engines. Initially\, these were the road-based Auto-Truck and then the Rail Truck. These characterful little locomotives were noted for being lightweight\, and they therefore found a particular niche in industrial use. Some of the very last locomotives to be used on industrial narrow gauge railways in the UK were of Lister manufacture. ListerFest will celebrate all things Lister! Inevitably\, there will be a focus on Rail Trucks\, but the event will showcase the vast variety of machines of all shapes and sizes which came out of the factory. As a starting point\, the Moseley Railway Trust already has four operational Lister locomotives in the collection at Apedale – the fourth being Lister 52031 of 1960\, which has been recently subject to a thorough restoration\, and was launched into service at Apedale during the “Anything Goes” event of 24 & 25 June. The Trust invites owners of anything Lister\, but most especially Rail Trucks\, to get in touch to register interest in attending.  \nExhibit entry forms here (Word) and here (pdf). \nUpdate – Feb 2024:- The fares for this event will be £8 adults\, £4 children\, £18 family. Standard fares include site admission and a single train ride. Day Rover tickets are available\, £25 adults\, £15 children\, £55 family. HRA passes etc are NOT valid at this event. \nWe are also delighted to welcome a large number of Lister Autotrucks\, a Lister diesel roller and many stationary engines! But plenty of space for more – so please download and complete entry forms. \nUpdate – April 2024 \nThe current list of expected visiting locomotives is as follows (in works number order\, where known): \nLister 3834 c/o Mr Brian Faulkner (this is a tentative attendee currently) \nLister 4088 c/o Abbey Pumping Station Museum\, Leicester \nLister 7280A c/o Mr Neil Clayton. It is hoped a second loco from Mr Clayton’s collection will attend. \nLister 8022 c/o Mr Brian Faulkner  \nLister 11410 c/o Mr Rick Stewart \nLister 14005 “Steam Tram” c/o Tanat Valley Railway\, Rich Morris Collection. Static exhibit. \nLister 28890 c/o Mr Alan Frodsham \nLister 33650 c/o Mr Brian Faulkner  \nLister 34521 c/o The Amberley Museum rail group \nLister 34523 c/o North Gloucestershire Railway\, Toddington \nLister 39005 c/o Tanat Valley Railway\, Rich Morris Collection.  \nLister 41803 c/o Mr Colin Copcutt \nLister Blackstone 51651 c/o Mr Ian Hughes \nLister Blackstone 54181 c/o Mr Gareth Rees \nLister Blackstone 56371 c/o Mr Brian Faulkner  \nLister-engined Ruston 166010 c/o Mr Martin O’Keefe \nIn addition\, resident Listers 50888\, 52031\, 52610 and 52885 are expected to be operating\, along with Lister-engined Keef No.4. Lister 52528 is a long-term restoration project\, but will be on display. Discussions continue with several other loco owners. \nOn each day\, the first train will be at 10:00. Between 10:00 and 11:30\, the passenger trains will be operated by combinations of Lister locos. From 1130 until 1400\, trains will alternate between Lister traction and steam loco “Stanhope”. Between 14:00 and 15:00\, there will be a Grand Parade of Listers around the Field. Between 15:00 and 16:00\, Lister passenger trains will alternate with “Stanhope”. Between 16:00 and 17:00\, Listers will again haul the passenger train exclusively. After 17:00 on Saturday\, we’ll probably do something special – but that will be planned nearer the time. Conscious that many locos have not been seen in public for some years\, and certainly have not hauled a passenger train\, we will attempt to ensure that every loco has at least one trip on the passenger train during the weekend. The exact order will depend on locos passing Fitness to Run exams and their haulage capabilities being assessed. We will try to publish a loco vs train times schedule nearer the time – but this is likely to be on Friday 17th! \n
