80 years ago, on November 27 1944, one of the largest non-nuclear explosions on human history occurred at RAF Fauld, Staffordshire. 70 people lost their lives in a blinding cataclysm as nearly 4000 tons of munitions were accidentally detonated. The dead were a mixture of servicemen, Italian prisoners-of-war and civilians working or living in the area surrounding the RAF munitions depot. An unrecorded number of lives must have been scarred by what was experienced on that day.
The Moseley Railway Trust today marked that day, using a locomotive and wagons which worked at RAF Fauld. We were joined by the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, representatives from today’s RAF and the deputy mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
